• 10Gb Ethernet is now "afforadable"

I finally upgraded the LAN between my servers from 1Gb Ethernet to 10Gb Ethernet.

I'd hestitated before because of the 10GBase-T switches available were expensive (I wasn't interested in going down the SFP+ route, I wanted to use CAT6(a) cabling) - anyway, MikroTik has a nice 4(+1) port 10GBaseT switch for under $200:

I got a couple Intel (X540-T1) NICs for $70 each, and cheap CAT6A cables, and voila: 10Gbits!

My Internet speed is still just 640/40Mb, but I have to move large files (usually video) between systems often enough that this is a huge time saver. And I'm hoping the lower latency will help with my Samba/SMB share issues (lost lock/unlock requests) that happen about once a day.
